For gay and lesbian couples, this is a huge setback. We expected this day, but it still comes like a thud. The Supreme Court grants the rights which gays and lesbians have fought hard to gain, and a group of right wing Conservatives attempt to take them away again. People would rather restrict the rights of others, than be supportive. Yet, I can hear it now,..."We don't hate gays and lesbians, just what they do, who they sleep with, what they stand for, and anything that has to do with being gay. But we don't hate them!"
What kind of idiotic nonsense is that?

The same idiotic nonsense that says we don't hate polygamists, we just hate what they do, who they sleep with, what they stand for and anything that has to do with being a polygamist. But we don't hate them.
Oh yeah, how dare Conservatives try to get the voice of the people instead of a few lawyers to impose their will.

Actually, NO.
Polygamy goes against the human nature we have evolved into. Humans are serial monogamists. Polygamy is a failed attempt to excessively reproduce. Without slaves (including lesser wives)and eunochs, it is an infeasible attempt at selfishness. If we accept polygamy, we then have to accept violence, and other "uncivilized" methods of mate acquisition.
It also messes with the entire accepted method of the distribution of wealth among heirs.

Proponents of gay marriage have to steer the conversation away from neocon rhetoric, and impress on the people of CA what voting for a ban really means. And it means they would be throwing away the very premise our country was built on...equal rights. Neocons have got to be stopped from defining the conversation on this issue. Otherwise, people will vote with emotions, rather than brains. And that's what CONS count on, emotions. The gay community is smarter than that, & it's time for them to become more sophisticated in their approach to this. Voters will respond in kind.

Wrong Locky, you fail to accept that the Supreme Court of California has ruled. Some branch of government has to protect the rights of the people. When the governor will not do it, and vetoes the will of the legislature, then it is up to the judiciary to protect the rights of the people. The rights of the minority must be protected from the tyranny of the majority. As for the red herring that is your polygamy argument, no one in the LGBT movement has proposed endorsing polygamy. So forget that comment.

This is sad, and also sad that there are some people that devote any energy into denying equal rights, as if allowing equal rights to homosexuals to also marry the person they love and are attracted to, will in any way change their marriage. Ignorant if you ask me. The only people I had to get approval from when I wanted to get married was the state, and they didn't give a damn about who I was marrying, or where, except for age of consent and not a blood relative, perfectly legit concerns! They didn't care what kind of sexual activity we practiced, if we were swingers, cheaters etc...hell they don't even care if we were murderers. For those who want to deny equal rights, why do you care about what 2 people of age do in their bedroom and with who? And why wouldn't you want 2 people to be in a committed relationship? they cannot change their sexual orientation just because you are uncomfortable, concentrate on your own life and don't think about theirs.

In my lifetime, I will get the rights associated with marriage. It will happen. There is no way that any ban on marriage equality is constitutional. Look at Loving v the State of Virginia to see precedent. It will happen just like the sodomy laws were struck down too.
Institutionalized bigotry is still bigotry.

Gay marriage ban qualifies for California ballot
Is this ballot Really necessary? I Don't Think So....
Locky12.. Comment relating to HoMosexuals and polygamists, is Correct. No one knows for sure if, in the HoMosexual Lesbian and/or Homosexual Men in the LGBT movement has proposed endorsing polygamy.
For any person to say 'forget that comment' is extremely Rude, Narrow Minded and Insulting.
Opinions matter, This conduct is Shallow and Not necessary to advance the cause...

Once again, Hobe, wrong. Your juvenile way of spelling homosexual is offensive and demeaning. We all know you can do better, but you choose to type a certain way to be purposely ignorant. As for your point, no one in the LGBT civil rights movement is encouraging polygamy. In fact, it seems more likely that polygamy is a hetero concept. After all, according to the Koran, Muslim men are encouraged to take on multiple wives. The Fundamentalist LDS out in Utah and Arizona are Christian and encourage hetero polygamy. Those seem to be hetero issues, not gay ones. Hence, your argument is pure crap!

Let the Court overturn the will of the people? Two men marrying each other is not a right.

Absolutely, no marriage is a right by the US Constitution. However, it is not in question here. The California Constitution is at question. It claims that marriage is a right. It further states that all people are to be treated equally under the law. Hence, the Supreme Court of California reached the right decision in that LGBT people of California were being denied equal rights under the law.

Let the Court overturn the will of the people? >>>>>
WHOA! Hold on there, bubba. The will of the people? We are a Constitutional Republic. We are NOT a pure democracy. The majority does NOT rule. The final say goes to the Constitution, so that the rights of ALL are preserved, and not left up to the whims of any 'majority.'
