In a monumental victory for the gay rights movement, the California Supreme Court overturned a voter-approved ban on gay marriage Thursday in a ruling that would allow same-sex couples in the nation's biggest state to tie the knot.

"What is fascinating to me about this ruling is that the State Supreme court of California is made up of 6 Republican appointees and 1 Democratic appointee. So why are the Repubs trying to paint this as a issue to use against the Dems?"

  I'm more wary that this was a move by the cons in order to energize the far right base for the election. seemed to work in 2004.

I myself DO NOT believe in gay marriages. If God wanted just one sex, he would of made just one sex, but he made two. For people to lust for the same sex is a no..no. Look up the 7 deadly sins against GOD. If you are about to do this, just think it of as a great test from GOD. Do you pass or did you fail and follow Lucifer's doings. I am not here to condemn anyone, for that is GOD'S job....But if you are unsure...just read your Bible, and GOD will show you the right path. Have faith...

  No where does God or Christ say that marriage is meant solely for a man and a woman.
  Instead of looking up the seven deadly sins against God (Very good, however for all those that support the war in Iraq to look up, I suppose), try reading the beatitudes and looking up the great commandment and the golden rule.

    Read Romans 1:18-32. Excerpt v 26 forward. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. NIV
    They are allowed to do this as punishment. The court did not correct a wrong here. They made an illegal act legal, which does not make it right, just legal.

      Can you tell me how this issue affects you personally? Surely adultery is mentioned far more in the Bible and I don't see you out protesting McCain for having an affair.
      Why is this issue important to you? Why do you need to have someone who is less of a citizen than you?

        How? I still don't see how my marriage would be any different than Pamela Andersons many marriages. Elizabeth Taylor is allowed to marry and her marriages could be never be called genuine.
        So does that mean that you also are working on a constitutional ammendment to stop celebrities from getting married?

        Most people pick and choose from their scripture, which is why we don't stone disobedient children to death.
        For a lot of Christians, the overriding message of love and charity in the New Testament outweigh the laundry list of offenses in the Old.

        Show me the Bible scripture that says marriage is to be only between a man and woman.
        It's not there.
        I can point out plenty of scripture that condemns adulterers like McLame, including scripture that requires his death.
        Let me know when you start pushing for that and you can stop being a hypocrite.

        Are you saying, O "I'm not a Muslim", that the Bible IS for something MORE than marriage between man and woman? That it DOES allow for gay marriage? IF you are trying to win Muslims over to Islam, quit attacking the Bible. SURE attacking the Bible might help a little, but, focus more on the eternal, youthful boys that await the Jihadist who dies trying to kill for Allah. I think you'll make more mileage there. By the way, HOW am I a hypocrite? EXAMPLES, please? :)

  If you actually study the context of the language used in the bible, you will find as all noted Bible scholars have that God does NOT condemn homosexuality. Watch the movie "For the Bible Tells Me So" if you want to learn about that. It is full of real Bible scholars who have studied for years and know a heck of a lot more about it than you or I.

    You don't even have to study the context. Leviticus 20 condemns only a specific act. Not homosexuality in general. Knowing the original languages, though, is key. As is socio-historical context.

      So, what you are saying is, is that in the original Hebrew, you'd get the feeling that the God of Leviticus would be more tolerant of show tunes? Where'd you learn this, the "Advocate's Interpretation of the Bible"? Well, I'm pretty sure you'd say this, O "I'm not a Muslim", being that you seem to think that only English versions of the Qu'ran make Allah sound like Satan. That, if we could just understand the classical Arabic, we'd see Islam as peaceful. Probably see the EARTH orbitting the sun, rather than the sun setting in murkey springs.

        Nope. And all of your belittling language doesn't change the facts that the bible was written a long time ago and words had different meanings. If you would actually take the time to study, you would realize that it doesn't change your life at all unless you are gay.
        So it is you who is still looking at this issue through some kind of blinder. Maybe you should look at why it bothers you? The ones who yell "queer" the loudest are usually hiding something themselves.

        Anyway, hamy, it sounds like you are also a student of the Qu'ran. When I was trying to get it out of Dionys if the classical Arabic Quran HE seems to follow was peaceful compared to the one that makes Allah sound like Satan in the three English versions of the Quran I'm familiar with, you said, "Nope". Does that mean you feel there is no difference between Classical Arabic and the three English versions of the Qu'ran we're familiar with?

        You might want to try taking a reading comprehension course.
        Children who are raised by gay parents, according to every single study that has been done, are the same as children who are raised by straight parents. As an adopted child, I have to ask if you would prefer that children remain in foster care travelling from home to home with a strong possiblity of neglect or abuse than to be adopted into a loving home with two parents who truly want a child?
        How sad for that child.
        And I didn't say that "words don't mean anything." What I said exactly is that the bible doesn't "cause" anything. It is an inanimate object incabable of causing fear. I am not afraid of the bible.
        And you still haven't answered the big question which is how does two people who you don't know getting married affect your marriage in a negative way. Tell me how it harms your apparently fragile marriage.

I keep hearing this, 'the will of the people' are being ignored by a judge. What they forget to mention is some times the will of the people are wrong when its their intention to discriminate or oppress.
Then its a judges right to. How long would segrated schools have lasted if the courts waited in kansas till the people approved integration of black and white children. possibly still today there would be separate schools. so what if a biggoted populous is against it. their wrong and should be overruled.

  The judge was right to do what he did but he will probably be overruled with a constitutional amendment he wont be able to ignore.
  That will just be showing California's bigotry. It is despicable their so eager to oppress they are wiling to inshrine it in their constitution. Sounds like germany puting in their constitution that jews cant be citizens of the reich.
  Are we in the US going to follow that example some day and remove citizenship from homosexuals. What about consentration camps. will that follow.
  This is a issue im passionate about jump. I am a jewish woman and we as a people, jews, have experienced horrible persecutions. I dont want to see any other class of people suffer persecution either. It is all wrong.

      I live in California and the whole voting process is becoming irrelevant. And the whole court thing overturning the will of the people goes way beyond gay marriage.
      Here is how it works in California. Thousands and thousands of signatures are gathered to put a proposition on the ballot. Millions of people vote on it. Then if the result isn't what a special interest group wants then they sue and take it to court and they throw tantrums until they get what they want.
      It doesn't matter what the issue is.

        Again, this isn't about throwing a tantrum. And, just like abortion, what business is it of people anyway? It doesn't affect their lives. Why should they be allowed to tell me I can't get married? Why don't we all end marriage rights for everyone and then no one will have to suffer.
