Posted By david_nwpa 1 year ago in StyleDespite an ongoing federal lawsuit challenging the Okeechobee County School Board's banning of a Gay-Straight Organization the board has moved to tighten its rules governing clubs. At a meeting Tuesday the board revised its rules on clubs to bar from the campus of Okeechobee High School any "sex-based" clubs.

Is it not enough that the school board does not want to allow gay and lesbian students to meet in a club setting with their straight counterparts, they want to make it even tougher for the two groups to come together? Being gay is about more than having sex, just as being straight is about more than just having sex. Hence, a gay-straight alliance is more than a "sex club." The school board is buying into a horrible stereotype and myth.

Gay straight alliances are not a threat to schools. They are an opportunity to provide an outlet for students who are gay or have gay friends and want to learn more about what sexual identity is. It has less to do with sex, than it does exploring how to be civil to one another. Seems like Florida would be proud to promote that.

No. They would not be proud to promote that. I have lived in Florida. I can tell you first hand, it is politically and culturally one of the most retrograde states in the country. Their alleged upscale economy notwithstanding, the place makes states like Arkansas or Mississippi seem literally like epicenters of enlightenment. If anything, that jerkwater school board will be proud to promote their own benighted intransigence, not civility, as the virtue most worth defending.

If you want some more background on this (I hope you don't mind me posting this david) I wrote a Smack of the Day about this very issue (and this school district) in January.

Gay-Straight alliances should be something we all strive to promote. Actually, I'd like to see the time come when there isn't such a thing and we're all just people. But, hey, I'm an idealist.

Quite right BK - but then we are already.
Its just that sometimes we all find something intolerable about someone and we're back in the jungle again.

We should all be so idealistic.

Students who are organized, especially in a small system, have considerable power. There are many negotiating points that an organized student body can put on the table with administrators if they are brave enough nad loyal to eachother. When my class had a racism argument with the school board, we demanded our position be considered, or we would all stop all extracurricular activities, including sports and graduation.

The school board will try any tactic which will help to keep its homophobia alive.

This banning is exactly why a Gay-Straight Alliance is needed in that community. Remember, when integration happened, it was children who enlightened their parents. Let's hope it can happen again.
Children don't hate people inherently. They hate because they are taught to do it.

Alfie, poor misguided soul. Are you straight solely because you have sex? Are you attracted to women because you wanna hop in the sack with anyone who will have you? Is that all there is to heterosexual relationships? If not, why should it be that way with gay relationships? How is it you have become an expert on gay dating? Why is it absurd if high school students want to band together to stamp out discrimination and negativity where they see it.
What is truly absurd is your sentiment!

"I'm not the one sticking my penis in another man's ass and attempting to convince people I'm normal."
Then why not try just sticking it in his mouth; maybe that'll feel normal for you.

Alfalfa----"I'm not the one sticking my penis in another man's ass and attempting to convince people I'm normal"
Your bigoted comments indicate that you are not normal. You've missed the point on this whole thread, yet you prattle on allowing everyone here to see what an obtuse ranter you are. Get a clue before you comment. Dumb ass.

Alfalfa---"Homosexuality is an illness, not a lifestyle"
It's neither an illness nor is it a lifestyle. It's a sexual identity. It's as normal for a homosexual to have relations with, and to feel love for, a member of the same sex as it is for heterosexuals to have the same with a member of the opposite sex. Nobody's trying to ram it down your throat. We are just trying to get you Neanderthals to realize that homosexuals have human feelings and are tired of your self-righteous, ignorant bigotry. But, if somebody is different from you, that makes them inferior, right? BTW, I'm heterosexual.

Alcoholics who have never taken a drink??? you mean they are potential alcoholics IF they ever drink. Because if you don't mean that, that would mean alot of people should already be called diabetics, have hypertension, and many other potential things that run in families.
Babies are born addicts, also nicotine, alcohol etc.. because the mother who was supplying nutrition to them used, just like anyone else who would put things into your body.
What does that have to do with sexual orientation??
My point was..1 not all homosexuals engage in activites you spout off, and 2 just as there are hetrosexual virgins, there are also homosexual virgins.

Even Th American Psychiatric Society no longer classifies Homosexuality as an illness. Who are we to argue with alfalfa, who I suspect is merely a baiter - a masterbaiter.
