The good General is of the opinion that being gay is immoral. Hence anything he said earlier in the year as somewhat of a mea culpa was purely for political reasons. He had clarified his comments saying that the military policy is what should be discussed and not his personal views. It seems to me that the General would rather die in a foxhole than have a gay person send him the necessary information he needs for survival.
His staff discharged 56 Arabic translators in a time of war for being gay. Sure he followed military protocol, but at what price?

this just goes to prove that just because you are a general does not mean you have a brain on your shoulders.. they got where they are by kissing butt.. doesn't that make them in some way a homo?? kind of like the pot calling the kettle to me.. i am tired of hearing what these idiots have to say.. no doubt he was a jerry falwell supporter.

I really cannot fathom where people get the notion that being gay is evil, unless it is from the Old Testament. For a great religious text that teaches peace, tolerance, non-violence and acceptance of gays as being people that are only loving one another, try the "Korana of Mother Goddess" available at Amazon.com, LuLu.com or on ebay (cheapest).
It just seems to me that if one is loving and kind, you can see that also in the gay people around you, if you only would look. This General has some major problems with peace and love.

I really don't care who sleeps with who....and if you want to call being gay "moral", go right ahead. I have no need to respond.
But ask yourself this: How many parents actually want their children to be gay? Not how many would accept it, but how many want it.
Put aside all your excuses...all the BS about prejudice and being happy, acceptance, etc. When push comes to shove, no one wants their child to be gay. No one.
And yet....we're doing everything we can to make it easier to be gay. Even though it's not something we would want for our child, we're going everything we can to make it more acceptable. And that's moral?

It is not a question of what parents want or do not want. They cannot change someone who is gay or lesbian any more than I can make myself straight. I am happy to be gay, and happier to have a gay son. I live by a moral code which says to live and let one another live in peace. I believe in pursuing happiness.
We are doing everything to make it easier to be gay?? You jest! If that were true, we would not be fighting for the same rights as straight people, namely the right to wed the person whom we love. It most certainly is moral to create an atmosphere in which people do not have to lie about their sexual identity, rather, they can live without fear of retribution. People should be able to live without wondering whether they will lose career, home, and friends simply for being who they are! That is moral!

This is silly, cherev. Most people would not want their children to be in any minority position because of the difficulties that arise from prejudice. You would definitely not want your children to be red-headed or blond, or anything other than brown-eyed if you lived in Asia. These things are characteristics of demons in most Asian religions, and your children would be ridiculed, shunned, maybe hurt, or even killed for it. The same is true for queers in America, but it does not have to stay that way, and the first step is to get rid of discriminatory laws and regulations.

Yes of course homosexuality is immoral. All those good christian soldiers should line them up, along with those dirty muslims and have some target practice. Perhaps that's not enough....Lets tar and feather them, draw and quarter or stone them to death. Oh it's good to know we Christians like the good general have a monopoly on morality.

No, you don't "think" it's immoral, you "believe" so. There is no evidence to support any such thought.

Dear David,
You still think so, when the world is teetering on the edge of a climatological abyss............. as a result of that human activity known as heterosexuality and unrestrained propagation of the race?
The old fathers said the same things about religious life - and in fact codified it: there is no place for that type of behavior in our religious...
Your statement, "[S]atay away from the professional military", betrays an underlying sexual tension.

Not all the old religions taught that homosexuality was evil. Yeshua never said so, and I simply cannot believe that no one in Galilee was homosexual, and if there were 12 disciples, assuredly one was gay and I bet it wasn't Judas. Go figure

We can have a professional military because we pay them. Since we pay them, we can, and do, tell them what their objectives will be and what the rules about achieving those objectives will be. When the exact same objections were raised about racial integration of the services, Truman told the generals to make it happen, and if they could not do it for whatever reason to leave their stars on his desk when they left. We need a president to take a similar stand about homosexuality, and let that be the end of it. If you can't soldier beside a competent loyal American who happens to be gay, find yourself another profession in the private sector. Our country doesn't need you.

That is the exact same stand that has been taken in Germany, Switzerland, England, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland...ah who am I kidding, most of Europe has adopted the same policy as has Canada.

At one time in our military history, it was thought that having soldiers of different races serve together was immoral.
At one time it was thought that only lesbians were the only women wanting to be a part of the military, and it was perfectly fine for men to bait women into refusing to have sex with them, and thus could legally oust them, accusing them of being lesbians.
At one time it was thought that because certain physical characteristics of a race were smaller than a "normal" (ie white) man, it meant their intelligence wasn't equal, thus they claimed they couldn't do "advanced" classes like engineering, medicine, physical science, etcetera, nor could they operate a "complicated" machine like an airplane.
LCD, if you switched "homosexual" with "black", then you'd see that your comments are equally reprehensible...

You are an idiot.
The same rules that apply to the millitary would still apply if homosexuals were allowed to openly serve. They still wouldn't be able to date each other or have sex.
And homosexuals are in the millitary right now!! I have friends in Iraq right now. They just cannot be open about it. Everyone in their group knows about them. They just don't care.
It is just using homosexuality as politics that is keeping this an issue.

Then how do you explain the success of the Greek and other ancient armies whose leaders *encouraged* sexual relationships among the troops knowing they'd fight even harder to protect their loved ones??

I have yet to meet an African American that could fake it as a Caucasian. This is the worst analogy I have ever seen. Racial discrimination and Homosexual actions are diametrically different. It is possible to be around a Homosexual without them telling you so or knowing it. It is impossible for a African American to hide his/her heritage.

Whether or not you know that person sitting next to you is gay or lesbian should not affect how that person is treated, based on that fact alone.
This is what most homophobic straight people fail to realize. So someone has different sexual tastes differ from yours... so what? So someone practices a different religion... so what? Based on that alone is no reason for prejudice. And given the fact that the same military Code of Conduct should apply to everyone equally, the sexuality of your fellow soldier should never be an issue.

THANK YOU! I have always deplored attempts to compare racial discrimination with being homosexual. Race is not a flawed genetic, however, homosexuality is and the comparison is completely inappropriate.
Also, gay people should at least be honest and admit that some people can "become" gay, as in they are not necessarily born that way. Therefore, teaching children that it's "OK" to be gay is only encouraging the possible recruitment of future young people into the gay life. That's just wrong. Someone else said it here, you'd be hard pressed to find parents who actually WANT their kids to be gay.

''It is impossible for a African American to hide his/her heritage.''
you may not know this, but African-americans passed for white over and over and over again, too many instances to count, pre-civil rights movement.
Your statement tells me you are either young or never caught a PBS special with someone talking about passing for white when doing such a thing meant better treatment.
Don't hear about people doing it now, because, thankfully, things have changed for the better in societally-backed treatment of different people

The I guess you've never heard the phrase "passing for white", have you, sweetie??
This was rampant in the south during Jim Crow! Not only that, but many "high yaller" blacks also tried to pass as Cuban as well.
I respectfully suggest going to the following websites:
http://www.racematters.org/passingforwhite.htm
http://www.jimcrowhistory.org/resources/lessonp...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passing_(racial_id...
Obviously, your ignorance is only exceeded by your utter lack of knowing your history!

How can you say that you do not hate homosexuals when you would deny them the right to fight for their country too? You say that they should only do certain jobs, stay away from the millitary, be controlable. You are saying that homosexuals do not have the same rights straight people do and you are OK with that.
Now, unless you are willing for me to not pay taxes because I don't have the same rights, you should take that back. I bet if homosexuals didn't have to pay taxes, everyone would want to be gay.

There are lots of things that people can't do because of the lifestyles they lead. No military service, no donating of blood products or other vital organs. Why, because the chances of carrying communicable blood borne disease is greater in this population. This is true of drug users as well.
The average life expectancy in homosexuals is significantly lower than with heterosexuals as well. There is a reason for this and it comes from the moral position that monogamy is the healthiest lifestyle both physically and emotionally. Statistics prove this out with married people live longer. I have yet to meet a monogamous homosexual that waited for a caring loving relationship. Maybe I am wrong but find me a homosexual that has only ever had one partner.

hamy11 months, 2 weeks ago
I know several.
Have you ever thought that the reason our life expectancy might be lower (I have never seen such a statistic) is because we are constantly having to fight for rights?
Because we had to fight a very deadly disease that the government simply ignored because it "only affected drug users and homosexuals and we don't need to save them?"
Also, that the suicide rate among gay teens is much higher than that of straight teens?
Why is that?
OH! That's right! It is because we are constantly told by people like you that we are not right. That we are not moral. That we are going to hell. That we are destroying civilization.
You can't compare apples to oranges.
And do me a favor. When you speak of this so-called statistic on life expectancy, look at the life expectancy of African Americans too.
Tell me what you see.

Good God! Find me any number of people who haven't been divorced? Yes, many of us have had failed relationships. Yes, quite a few are promiscuous. But guess what? Quite a few straight people (and that IS the understatement of the year) are promiscuous.
I am too much of a Southern gentleman to express my opinions to everyone. But when I hear stuff like this, something in me just snaps! You need to know that gay people are all around you. An estimated 10% of the population is gay. We all don't fit a mold anymore than you would consider your promiscuous straight counterparts.
That sounds so matter-of-fact when I read it, but I do not think most of these people do not quite get it.
Be a grown-up, will ya? We are in the 21st Century!
(That last part is because I've had a couple of cocktails and I felt like writing it....)

This goes to show that whether under the Roman collar or under the four stars of a US General, orthodoxy hides a convulsive, almost angst-ridden, clinging to old and familiar "moralities" and so condemns mankind to statism, a moral inertia, if you wish!
I wonder what kind of terrors occupied the good general's mind when he was in bootcamp, where they have communal showers....

I agree with david. Im a mother of four sons and yes I would prefer none of them were gay BUT ONLY cos life is tough enough without the added burden of prejudice and homophobia. I would also prefer they didn't become a hari chrishna or a car salesman but at the end of the day all that is important is that they are happy and live honorably.
