It may be known for its breathtaking views of the Minas Basin and the sheer cliffs of Blomidon, but a quiet corner of Nova Scotia has become the setting for an historic political first that some say will further affirm gay rights.

Brison is right in saying that some day this will be a non-issue. It should not matter that he is a gay politician. He is a politician who happens to be gay. He is marrying his true love and will do so legally. Canada has so much it could teach the US if only we would listen.

It's already a non-issue to a lot of people. I think it has taken up too much time in American politics as it is. Just recognize equal rights and be done with it. There are far more important matters at hand.

It is always a cool thing when someone marries the one he loves. But the best political news is that everyone is so ho-hum about the wedding!

The puritanical US would bring down the wrath of God if it treated all of its citizens they way they should be treated. Or is it the other way around? Hypocrisy gets me confused sometimes.

Canada took a long and torturous route to full inclusion for every province, but the country will be the better for it, just as they have in universal health care, etcetera.

I visited the country in 2002 and was amazed at the lack of litter and trash along the highway. I think having a bottle deposit law helps alot and I even scrounged what few bottles I found along the way and what I brought with me and what I bought enroute and turned them in for a refund.

Hopefully one of these years I'll be able to return to Quebec City, and take in more of the sites along the way.. Toronto, Montreal, etcetera...

I was in Montreal a few weeks ago. The city was amazingly clean, well-kept, and remarkably easy to navigate. The people were friendly and diversity posters were practically everywhere. Gays and lesbians were welcome alongside straight people and no one seemed to care about sexual identity. It was simply a non-issue. I would love to visit their fine city again, but would not want to live there. I prefer the US and would rather make a difference here than move away.

My (adopted) province of Nova Scotia seems to be the place for firsts in Canada. Last year the first wedding of a gay RCMP officer happened here. Nice to see the ho-hum attitude, especially in a generally conservative area of the province. Mr. Brison and his beau were pictured on the cover of the local newspaper a couple of days ago - they looked very happy. Congrats to them!

It's exhausting to keep debating this issue, but I can't believe that people think this is normal. "...It's merely the story of a popular local boy who's come home to marry his longtime love." It's just weird.

And it is exhausting trying to get people like you to see that what is not necessarily normal for you may indeed be normal for someone else. And HOW, exactly, does recognizing the validity of a gay or lesbian relationship negatively effect your marriage or relationship?

I think you'll find that "wierd", like "beautiful", is in the eye fo the beholder. It seems to be a failing common to all of us that we don't recognize that the origin of our reactions to things is within us, and not truely related to outside events.
